Cause for Motion

marked dance project to give back through its dance concert  “Cause for Motion” All proceeds raised from ticket sales will go to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research. “Cause for Motion” explores through choreography the strength of the human spirit and how it handles some of the most difficult moments in life.

A contemporary-modern dance company that incorporates disabled and non-disabled dancers, MDP is dedicated to bringing awareness to various community issues: “When I was deciding which charity the money should go to, I thought about the people in my life and what challenges they’ve faced,” said artistic director Mark Travis Rivera. “I thought about my former teacher Erin Pride and her family whose life changed when they found out one of their relatives had Parkinson’s.”

Dedicated to The Pride Family and to the victims of the Sandy Hook shooting, artistic director Mark Travis Rivera hopes that the show will not only benefit Fox’s Foundation but also raise awareness of Parkinson’s and how it impacts those who have it.

“The show’s concept is all about the human spirit and its ability to deal with the difficulties life sometimes throws our way. Moved by the strength of the people whose life was altered by the horrible shooting at Sandy Hook, I felt inspired by their spirit and their community. I knew I also wanted dedicate this show to the victims and their families,” said Rivera.

In September of 2011, the company collaborated with several other dance companies to present “Spectrum,” a benefit dance concert that raised over $1,500 for the autism organization MyGoal, Inc.

“This production is the company’s first show that is entirely ours,” says Rivera. “Spectrum was a collaborative show that featured other dance companies. This time around it’s just us.”
